Nord Stage 4 88 – 88-Key Digital Stage Piano

A flagship performance keyboard built for demanding live and studio environments

The Nord Stage 4 88 represents the latest evolution of Nord’s flagship stage piano line, designed for professional musicians who require immediacy, flexibility, and sonic consistency in live and studio contexts. Building on the foundations of the Stage 3, the Stage 4 introduces a redesigned panel layout, expanded sound engines, and a significantly enhanced effects architecture, while retaining the instantly recognisable Nord workflow.

With its fully weighted 88-note Triple Sensor keybed, three independent sound engines (Piano, Synth, Organ), and extensive real-time control, the Stage 4 88 is positioned as a comprehensive performance instrument rather than a traditional digital piano.

Keybed and Playing Experience

At the centre of the Stage 4 88 is Nord’s fully weighted Triple Sensor hammer-action keybed, featuring aftertouch and high-resolution key tracking across the full range. The triple sensor design allows for faster note retriggering and more accurate articulation, particularly beneficial for expressive piano passages, repeated notes, and dynamic control in layered setups.

Three selectable keyboard touch curves (Heavy, Medium, Light) enable players to adapt the response to personal technique or performance context. Aftertouch integration further extends expressive control across all sound engines, including synth modulation and organ parameters.

Three Independent Sound Engines

Piano Section

The Piano engine includes 2 GB of dedicated memory and up to 120 voices of polyphony, supporting a wide range of acoustic and electric piano types:

  • Grand and Upright Pianos

  • Electric Pianos

  • Digital Pianos

  • Layered piano sounds

  • Clavinet and Harpsichord

Advanced features such as String Resonance, Pedal Noise, Soft Release, Dynamic Compression, and Unison contribute to a more realistic and controllable piano response, particularly in solo or exposed playing situations. All piano sounds are replaceable via the Nord Sound Manager for macOS and Windows.

Synth Section

Based on the Nord Wave 2 synthesis engine, the Synth section now offers three independent layers with 1 GB of sample memory, doubling the capacity of the previous generation. Oscillator types include:

  • Virtual Analog (with multiple waveform modes)

  • Digital Waves

  • FM synthesis

  • Sample-based playback

The engine supports 46-voice polyphony, extensive real-time control, and advanced modulation routing. Enhancements such as Tru-Vibrato, Round Robin, and Unison modes improve realism and variation, particularly for orchestral, string, and ensemble sounds.

An upgraded arpeggiator introduces Polyphonic, Gate, and Pattern modes, all synchronisable to the Master Clock.

Organ Section

The Organ engine features Nord’s award-winning organ simulations, including:

  • C2D B3 tonewheel organ

  • Vox Continental

  • Farfisa

  • Two digital pipe organ models

New physical drawbars with LED indicators provide immediate visual feedback and hands-on control, replicating the behaviour of classic tonewheel organs. Additional refinements include B3 Bass mode and a Model 122 Vintage Rotary Speaker simulation with selectable mic positions.

Effects Architecture

One of the most substantial upgrades in the Stage 4 is the expanded effects section, now offering dedicated effects per layer. This allows independent processing of Piano, Synth, and Organ layers without compromise.

Effects include:

  • Modulation (Tremolo, Auto Pan, Ring Mod, Wah, Pump sidechain modulation)

  • Additional Modulation block (Phaser, Flanger, Chorus, Ensemble, Vibe)

  • Delay with multiple modes, tap tempo, feedback filtering, and analog emulation

  • Amp and speaker simulations (Twin, JC, Small)

  • Tube overdrive and filter section

  • 3-band EQ with sweepable midrange

  • Rotary speaker with independent overdrive

  • Compressor with fast mode

  • Reverb with six algorithms: Spring, Booth, Room, Stage, Hall, Cathedral

All effect rates can be synchronised to the Master Clock, enabling tempo-accurate modulation and delay behaviour in live performance.

Live Performance Workflow

The Stage 4 88 is designed around immediate access and reliability on stage. Key workflow features include:

  • Layer Scene switching for instant sound configuration changes

  • Seamless Transitions between programs

  • Song List functionality for organised set management

  • Dual OLED displays for clarity in low-light environments

  • Up to three split points with adjustable crossfade widths

  • Three Morph sources (Mod Wheel, Control Pedal, Aftertouch)

Each sound engine has a dedicated control section with clear LED labelling, reducing menu dependency and improving confidence during live use.

Connectivity and Integration

The Nord Stage 4 88 offers comprehensive connectivity for professional setups:

  • 4 assignable audio outputs (¼” jacks)

  • Stereo headphone output

  • Stereo monitor input

  • MIDI In/Out (5-pin DIN)

  • USB MIDI for sound transfer and updates

  • Extensive pedal support, including sustain, triple pedal, swell, rotor, and control pedals

This flexibility makes the instrument suitable for both traditional stage rigs and hybrid studio-performance environments.

Physical Specifications

  • Dimensions: 1282 × 121 × 349 mm

  • Weight: 19.6 kg

  • Keybed: Fully weighted 88-note Triple Sensor hammer action

  • Product Code: NOR0096

Despite its extensive feature set, the Stage 4 88 remains manageable for transport, balancing robustness with practical portability.

Intended Use

The Nord Stage 4 88 is designed for professional musicians who require:

  • A single, integrated performance keyboard

  • Reliable sound switching and layered control

  • High-quality piano, organ, and synth engines

  • Consistent operation in demanding live conditions

It is particularly well-suited to touring players, session musicians, theatre productions, and studio environments where immediacy and sound integrity are priorities.
