Novation Peak Desktop Polysynth

Introductory overview

The Novation Peak is a desktop-format polyphonic synthesiser designed for studio and live electronic music production. It combines a digital sound-generation stage with analogue signal processing, offering an eight-voice architecture for detailed sound design, chordal work, and expressive synthesis.

Key characteristics and design

The Peak is built around three New Oxford oscillators per voice, using numerically controlled oscillators (NCOs) alongside 17 digital wavetables. This hybrid approach allows stable tuning while retaining a broad range of harmonic possibilities. Each voice is processed through a resonant multi-mode analogue filter, followed by multiple distortion stages placed before the filter, after the filter, and globally.

The synthesis engine supports extensive modulation through a 16-slot modulation matrix, complemented by direct front-panel assignments. Three ADSR envelopes and two LFOs per voice are available, enabling complex and evolving modulation paths. Integrated effects include chorus, delay, and reverb, alongside an onboard arpeggiator. Firmware updates expand functionality further, adding additional wavetables, modulation sources, microtuning support, and an effects modulation matrix.

Workflow and usability

The Peak is designed for hands-on sound creation, with a front panel that prioritises direct access to key parameters. Modulation routing and sound shaping can be performed without relying heavily on external software, supporting both structured programming and exploratory workflows. The Animate buttons provide real-time parameter changes, which can be used during performance or recording to introduce controlled variations within a patch.

For studio use, the Peak functions as a dedicated sound module that integrates into both hardware-focused and hybrid setups. Its desktop format makes it suitable for both fixed installations and portable rigs with limited space.

Integration and connectivity

Connectivity includes MIDI input and output via five-pin DIN, USB for computer-based integration, and a CV modulation input for interfacing with modular or semi-modular systems. This allows the Peak to operate within DAW-controlled environments, hardware sequencer setups, or mixed analogue-digital systems. USB connectivity also supports firmware updates and access to Novation Components, including the Wavetable Editor for creating and managing custom oscillator content.

Who this product is suited for

The Novation Peak is suited to electronic music producers, sound designers, and performers who work with polyphonic synthesis and require detailed modulation capabilities. It fits environments where a dedicated hardware synthesiser is used alongside DAWs, MIDI controllers, or modular systems, and where sound creation and manipulation are central to the production process.
